About the museum
The core of the Dunaföldvár castle is a square-based, three-storey tower, which protected an important crossing point of the Danube. There are no written sources for the exact date of its construction; it was probably raised early in the 16th century. The Ottomans surrounded the tower with a palisade wall, and in 1686 the retreating Ottoman army set it on fire. In 1705 the kuruc general Vak Bottyán recaptured it from the Imperial troops.
After the War of Independence the tower lost its military significance; the estate used it first as a prison and then as a granary. The great fire of 1858 destroyed the roof and the interior wooden structure; it was then rebuilt in truncated form, which is the origin of the name Csonka-torony (Truncated Tower). A listed-monument excavation was carried out in 1974, an exhibition was set up within its walls, and in 2006 a large-scale renovation followed.
In the castle courtyard stands the Fafaragó Galéria, which since 1996 has offered a platform for contemporary Hungarian woodcarving and folk sculpture, and the Ispánház, whose ground floor operates as an exhibition venue and whose upstairs hall can be rented. Climbing the spiral staircase of the tower opens up a panorama over the Danube.
