About the museum
The museum emerged from the rescue excavations connected with the construction of the Danube Iron Works and the new town, which began in spring 1950. At the great excavation of 1951, researchers from almost every part of the country took part, and the builders initiated the display of the finds on site. Thus it was decided to establish a museum for the socialist town being built south of Dunapentele.
The institution has been housed in a former party house since 1970, and since 1975 it has borne the name of the ancient predecessor settlement, Intercisa. Its collection ranges from the New Stone Age to the modern and most recent periods: its core is the Bronze Age (the Kisapostag, Kulcs and Koziderpadlás sites), the finds of the Roman military camp and civilian settlement are significant, and it also holds material from the Migration Period, the Conquest and Árpád periods, the Middle Ages and the Ottoman occupation, as well as an ethnographic and a historical collection on town-building.
Most of the permanent exhibition has been open since 1976; the prehistoric section was renovated in 2003. Since 2012 the ground-floor display room has presented material that was previously kept in storage. In the museum courtyard and in the town, Roman-era outdoor sites can also be visited, such as the Roman bath and the stone collection.
