About the museum
The memorial exhibition presents the poet’s most productive period in an authentic historical setting. Petőfi Sándor arrived in Szalkszentmárton on 12 July 1845, to the large inn rented by his parents. Here he wrote 112 poems, two plays (Zöld Marci, Tigris és hiéna) and a novel (A hóhér kötele). Among the venues in Hungary, this is where the most relics used by Petőfi and his parents can be seen. The former manorial inn is a listed monument; in its courtyard stands the country’s only intact ten-legged carriage shed (tízlábú kocsiszín), and on the street façade is a painted butcher’s sign (mészárszékcégér). The museum opened on 24 September 1972. Visitors are welcomed with guided tours, experiential education and a show kitchen.
