About the museum
The building on Kossuth Lajos utca was built around 1908 by physician Szalai Jenő; the domed central hall was added later. In 1925 it was bought and renovated by lawyer Suda Dezső, who moved his law office here; his family lived in the house until nationalisation.
From the 1950s the Pesterzsébeti Múzeum operated here; in the mid-1980s the museum moved to the Bocsák-villa. The building was completely remodelled to plans by Horváth Péter and Kugler Katalin and opened in 1989 as the Gaál Imre Galéria. The namesake, Gaál Imre (1922–1964), was a Pesterzsébet painter who died at a young age.
The gallery organises art and local history exhibitions that change from month to month, as well as concerts, literary evenings and lectures. Its permanent exhibition has presented the works of the painter Tóth Menyhért (1904–1980) since November 2003, and in the sculpture garden behind the house works by Medgyessy Ferenc and Meszlényi János can be seen.
