About the museum
The history of the Pesterzsébeti Múzeum goes back to the early 1950s: in 1951 a local-history working group was formed to establish the museum, and in 1952 the first exhibition opened. In 1954 it officially took the name Pesterzsébeti Múzeum. In the mid-1980s it moved into the Bocsák Villa on Baross utca, and in 1989 the Gaál Imre Gallery opened in the building on Kossuth Lajos utca.
The villa houses the museum’s permanent local-history exhibition. After nearly twenty years, the exhibition has been renewed with grant support and expanded to two rooms. It presents the history of District XX from the founding of Erzsébetfalva in 1870 to the present day. The first room surveys the past in chronological order; in the interior exhibition space, period rooms evoke the local small and large industry, the history of education and religion, and the former cinema and theatre life.
The institution’s sites also include the Gaál Imre Gallery and the Rátkay-Átlók Gallery, which can be visited separately. The collection includes fine art, local-history documentation and photographs. The museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00–18:00, and admission is free.
