About the museum
In 1935 the mayor of Kispest ordered by decree that the written and material memorials of the town's history were to be collected and preserved. The establishment of a museum appeared in the town's work plan from 1938 and in its budget from 1940. The surviving inventory book of 1943 contains 720 items. After the Second World War, collecting was kept alive for a long time by local teachers and local patriots, among them the teacher Benyó Márta; the holdings grew through donations.
The collection now preserves source materials on the history of Kispest, contemporary newspapers, ephemera, postcards, photographs, maps, works of visual and applied art, and objects that help research into ways of life. Particular emphasis is placed on the memory of the district's former industrial enterprises, above all on collecting products of the Gránit Porcellán-, Kőedény- és Kályhagyár (Gránit Porcelain, Stoneware and Stove Factory) and early decorative objects.
Since 2004 the collection has also organised the exhibitions of the Nagy Balogh János Kiállítóterem (Nagy Balogh János Exhibition Hall). In spring 2026 it moved into a new exhibition space on Nádasdy utca, where a permanent local history exhibition and temporary displays await visitors.
