About the museum
The collection goes back to the 1960s, when the creation of a collection presenting the history of the Hungarian textile and clothing industry became an urgent need. After the foundation of the Textilipari Műszaki és Tudományos Egyesület (Textile Industry Technical and Scientific Association) in 1965, the first textile and clothing industry exhibition was organised; following its success, the ministry and industrial companies also supported the setting up of an independent museum. After a long search, a permanent home was found in the factory building on Pannónia utca in Angyalföld, and the museum opened on 3 December 1986 under the name Textil- és Ruhaipari Múzeum (Textile and Clothing Industry Museum).
Today’s exhibition welcomes visitors in the original, renovated Goldberger factory building in Óbuda. The main house of one of the most venerable family enterprises in the textile trade was founded in 1784 as an indigo-printing manufactory; on the ground floor of this listed building complex an indigo-printing works operated, and the Goldberger family lived on the upper floor. The factory produced printed textiles that were exported to European countries until nationalisation. The factory closed for good in 1997.
The permanent exhibition, opened in 2013, follows the history of five generations of the family and the 200-year development of the enterprise. Visitors can see, among other things, printing and weaving machines, including a 19th-century Jacquard loom controlled by punched cards, indigo-printed costumes, the fabrics of the “Bemberg Parisette” man-made silk, and man-made fibre garments from the decades after nationalisation. The collection is maintained by the Óbudai Múzeum (Óbuda Museum).
