About the museum
The museum grew out of the Városi Múzeum (Town Museum) of Hajdúböszörmény. The school headmaster H. Fekete Péter began collecting local historical objects as a private collector in 1924; the town’s first collection, in the Reformed grammar school, consisted mainly of coins and a few historical, ethnographic and archaeological pieces. On 29 April 1928 the town council officially founded the museum, provided it with space in the former district headquarters, and appointed Fekete Péter as its director.
The first exhibition, the I. Hajdúhét (First Hajdú Week), opened in three rooms in September 1937. During the Second World War the museum suffered considerable damage; operations restarted in 1946. In 1949 it was declared a public collection, in 1950 the grammar school’s collection was merged into it, and in 1951 it was nationalised; it continued to operate as the Hajdúsági Múzeum with a collecting remit covering the whole territory of the former Hajdú District. The first permanent exhibition opened in six rooms.
The collection preserves archaeological finds (including Sarmatian-period vessels), historical documents, numismatic material, folk embroidered costumes, memorabilia of the Revolution of 1848–49 and objects linked to local crafts. The museum is housed in the former Hajdúkerületi székház (Hajdú District headquarters).
