About the museum
Collecting the material of the collection began in 1958, when the drawing teacher Trillsam Márton set up an archaeology circle. The objects were first displayed in the corridor of the primary school; from 1991 in the basement of the town library, and since 2011 in the renovated Imre Zoltán Cultural Centre (Imre Zoltán Művelődési Központ), where they are looked after by the library. The exhibition presents the town and its traditions from the Avar era to the 20th century. The display cases show everyday and festive objects, tools and furniture of peasant life; dressed dolls show the costumes typical of the region. White embroidery characteristic of Upper Bácska (Felső-Bácska) is also on display, as are photographs of the settlement's literary memorabilia and of its oldest local maps. A special attraction is the gift of Bányai Mihály, a museologist born in Jánoshalma who lives in Brazil: a Brazilian collection of minerals, Indian tools and ancient bone fossils.
