About the museum

The Kiskunhalas museum collection was founded in 1874: the Reformed Church then merged the Révész György antiquities collection with the collection of the Reformed Lyceum, creating the Halasi Múzeum, popularly known as the grammar school antiquities room. The collection later found its home in the Csipkeház; the museum’s present name comes from Thorma János, a leading figure of the Nagybánya painting school who was born in Halas.

The museum was named Museum of the Year in 1998 and again in 2018. The main building on Köztársaság utca houses the Bay Gyűjtemény, the Thorma Galéria and the Díszterem (ceremonial hall), the Régi Galéria (old gallery), a gallery corridor with coins, medals and insignia, the archaeological, local history and ethnographic exhibition, and the folk art display storage.

A special feature of the collection is the largest Nagybánya art exhibition in the country. Visitors are also welcomed by a three-language audio guide and interactive games for younger children.
