About the museum
On the site of the house on Eskü tér in Kiskunhalas, a building already stood at the end of the 18th or the beginning of the 19th century, on a redemptus plot. The present reed-roofed peasant house with wooden columns and a porch was built in 1879; its owners were the Orbán family and later the Baki family. The free-standing, single-storey building, with its wooden gable, faces the street along its long side.
On entering the three-room house, the open-hearth kitchen (szabadkéményes konyha) lies opposite, and from it opens the best room with a tiled stove from the 1920s–30s, and another room with a newly built oven. The plot also contains a manger stable (jászlas istálló) and a portable grain bin (hombár) moved here from Mélykút.
The Tájház has been operating as a heritage farmhouse since 1983. It presents a characteristic Halas farmstead that has preserved peasant and bourgeois objects from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as the buildings of urban livestock farming.
