About the museum
The oldest part of the castle, the Öregtorony (Old Tower), was built after the Mongol invasion of 1241–42, after the 1260s, on the orders of I. Péter of the Kacsics clan; later a high stone wall and a palace wing were built around it. In 1312, after the Battle of Rozgony, Károly Róbert had the castle besieged in vain; in 1313 it was granted to Szécsényi Tamás. At the end of the 14th century the Szécsényis created a storey, a knights' hall, a chapel and living rooms; in the time of King Mátyás the Guthi Országh and Losonczi families extended the palace wing in Renaissance style. From 1552 it was under Ottoman rule; it was recaptured in 1593, but in 1663 the Ottomans took it again.
