About the museum
The visitor centre of the Hortobágy National Park stands in the centre of Hortobágy, along Route 33, next to the Hortobágy inn (csárda). Its exhibitions have been renewed and expanded; a community space, a pergola and a crane sculpture have been created in front of the building.
The interactive exhibition “Hortobágy természete” (“The Nature of Hortobágy”) presents on two levels the natural richness of the puszta and the importance of preserving biological diversity, and prepares visitors for the national park's nature trails. “A darvak világa” (“The World of Cranes”) introduces the world of crane migration. In the Pusztai Kincsestár (Puszta Treasury), the exhibition “Jószág haszna” (“The Use of Livestock”) shows what puszta farming and grazing offer to those who work the land with care. In the gallery, old costumes of the Hortobágy herdsmen and of the burghers of the market towns are on display, and in the “lepecsételt szoba” (“sealed room”), a virtual reality experience recalls the wagon journey and the famous figures of Hortobágy.
In the courtyard, craft activities and playhouse programmes are available. The mixed ticket of the visitor centre is also valid at the nearby Pásztormúzeum (Shepherds' Museum).
