Hortobágyi Pásztormúzeum

An exhibition in the restored wagon shelter of the Hortobágy National Park on herding on the Puszta and the lives of the csikós (horse herders), gulyás (cattle herders), juhász (shepherds) and kondás (swineherds).

Opening hoursAdmission HUF 3,100

About the museum

The Pásztormúzeum building was a wagon shelter built in the 1780s, where travellers crossing the Puszta and visitors to the fairs could rest. The building was returned to its original state, and in 2024 the exhibition was completely renewed.

The display presents traditional livestock farming on Hortobágy and the people who did it, in the past and today. The highest-ranking herdsman of the Puszta is the csikós, who looks after the horses, followed by the gulyás (cattle herder), the juhász (shepherd) and finally the kondás (swineherd). With life-like figures, live scenes, projections and audio recordings, the exhibition recalls the herding life of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Visitors can try out what it was like to be a shepherd boy (bojtár): they can play a lamb-recognition game, ring the bells of the flocks and find out how “grass” becomes pörkölt (Hungarian stew). The room “Instant pusztaélmény” (instant Puszta experience) gives a brief taste of the atmosphere of the Puszta.
