About the museum
In autumn 1955 marble carvings from the temple of the goddess Isis, of Egyptian origin, were discovered by chance in Szombathely. Excavations lasting four years uncovered the remains of a vast complex of buildings. The stylised image of the temple façade even made its way into the town's coat of arms.
Over time the site deteriorated, so new archaeological research began in 2001, which led to the sanctuary being restored to its original splendour. The reconstructed sacred precinct, opened in 2011, now operates as a museum of ancient religious history.
In the spaces created where the temple's former colonnades stood, the exhibition Isis savariai otthona (Isis's Home in Savaria) presents, through interactive displays, the finds from the Iseum and the religious life of ancient people, both private and official. The institution also runs the exhibition space beneath the OTP bank branch, where groups by prior registration can become acquainted with the underground world of Savaria.
