About the museum
The Szily János Egyházmegyei Gyűjtemény és Látogatóközpont is named after Szily János (1777–1799), the first bishop of Szombathely, who is honoured as the second founder of the town. The visitor centre comprises the Püspöki Palota (Bishop’s Palace), the diocesan museum on the ground floor, and visits to the towers of the cathedral.
Among the splendid rooms of the palace are the Díszterem (state hall) with the ceiling painting by Franz Anton Maulbertsch, “Az Isteni Gondviselés allegóriája” (Allegory of Divine Providence), the Sárga szalon (Yellow Salon) with a carved chandelier, the Szent Pál-terem (St Paul Hall), the bishop’s private chapel, the Sala Terrena with the frescoes of Stephan Dorffmaister, and the Metszetterem (Print Room) with the views by Giovanni Battista Piranesi. The palace also houses the bishop’s private library (founded by Count Mikes János in 1927) and the diocesan treasury. The palace can only be visited with a guide; the museum on the ground floor can be visited without a guide.
