About the museum
Opened in 1985, the Szombathely Gallery is a national thematic museum that also operates as a Kunsthalle-type institution with 15–20 temporary exhibitions a year. The building's total area of 2,000 square metres can accommodate both large and small exhibitions.
The gallery also holds paintings from the 17th–19th centuries, but its character is defined by 20th- and 21st-century Hungarian art. The collection includes works of the early Hungarian avant-garde (Kassák Lajos and his circle), pop art, minimal art and conceptual art, as well as significant works of the new wave of the eighties. The textile collection of 2,500 pieces is the largest contemporary textile collection in the country; most of its material came from the Textil Biennále, later Triennále, held in Szombathely since 1970.
The institution also includes a restoration workshop and a specialist library of 10,000 volumes. The newest separate unit is the Schrammel Collection, which presents the life's work of the ceramic artist Schrammel Imre.
