About the museum
The Schrammel-gyűjtemény opened in Szombathely on 26 June 2021, as an institution of the Savaria Megyei Hatókörű Városi Múzeum (Savaria County-Level City Museum) and as a separate unit of the Szombathelyi Képtár (Szombathely Picture Gallery). It preserves part of the life’s work of the Kossuth Prize-winning ceramic artist Schrammel Imre, who was born in Szombathely.
In 2019 the artist donated a significant part of his life’s work, 111 works, to his home town. Besides these, 30 of his works on deposit from the Herendi Porcelánművészeti Múzeum (Herend Porcelain Art Museum) are also shown in the permanent exhibition. Schrammel’s experimental art is linked to the landscape of the Rába riverbank: his works were inspired by the flow of the river, clayey and sandy formations, and the observation of sediments.
The exhibition presents the defining groups of objects of the oeuvre under the themes Metszések (Cuttings), Lőtt formák (Shot Forms), Nyomhagyás (Imprints), Hordalékok (Sediments), Figurák (Figures), Pompei (Pompeii), Torzók (Torsos) and Minotaurosz (Minotaur). The building is the roughly 150-year-old Éva Mill, which functioned mostly as a warehouse for much of its history and has kept its industrial character to this day. On the ground floor, the reception area hosts temporary exhibitions, and in the basement room museum education sessions are held.
