About the museum
Excavations have been carried out in the Püspökkert, in the centre of Szombathely, since 1937. They have uncovered significant building complexes in the western district of Colonia Claudia Savariensium, a city founded around 50 AD. A palace built at the beginning of the 4th century was visited by Constantine the Great, Constantius II and Valentinian. The colourful mosaic floor of the palace's 50 × 17-metre reception hall is the largest known continuous mosaic surface in Pannonia.
In the garden can be seen the foundation walls of the former bathhouse and the shrine of Mercurius, as well as the basalt-paved road along which the Roman legions once marched. Pottery from the Roman city is presented in a separate exhibition unit.
In the Romkert the arched wall remains of the medieval inner castle can also be seen. The 9th-century castle was a central estate of the bishop of Győr until 1777; in 1532 Suleiman's army besieged it, and the neglected fortification was demolished in 1791 by János Szily, the first bishop of Szombathely.
