About the museum

The history of the light railways built in the northern part of the Börzsöny was for a long time tied to timber extraction. The centuries-old route of the Csarnavölgyi erdei vasút (Csarnavölgy forest railway) almost completely lost its role after the change of regime, and floods seriously damaged it. In 2000, members of the Kisvasutak Baráti Köre Egyesület (Light Railway Friends’ Association) restored the track and restarted operations.

At the beginning, two MD-40 class locomotives and four open passenger carriages were available. Since then the rolling stock has been expanded with vehicles rescued from the country’s closed light railways: diesel locomotives, battery-electric locomotives, passenger and freight wagons, mine railway wagons and track maintenance vehicles are all part of the collection.

The railway’s technical speciality, among passenger light railways, is its rare 600 mm gauge and its winding alignment. It is the only light railway in Hungary operated exclusively by voluntary work. In cooperation with Ipoly Erdő Zrt. (Ipoly Forest Company) and the association, trains run to a timetable over the roughly four-kilometre Kemence–Feketevölgy section, at weekends and on public holidays.
