About the museum
The institution was founded in Šahy in 1902 as a county museum on the initiative of the Hont County Museum Society, led by Elemér Pongrácz. The museum ceased operating in 1924 as a result of changes to the country's administrative divisions. Its last curator was Alajos Szokolyi, the first Hungarian Olympian.
As a municipal museum it was re-founded in 1992. Since 1995 it has been housed in two buildings: the Hontianske Museum is at J. Rotaridesa 13, while the Ľudovít Simonyi Gallery, formerly the Hont Gallery, is in a separate building. The museum has its own library with a historical and scholarly collection on the history of Hont, ethnography, archaeology and art history.
The institution also carries out archaeological research in the region and offers lectures and local heritage excursions. A Holocaust memorial stands in the museum courtyard, and in the gallery courtyard there is the sculpture “Vzťahy” (Relationships) by Adriena Kutaková.
