About the museum
The Mikszáth manor house in Horpács was built in 1906, in eclectic, classicising style, at the expense of Mikszáth Kálmán, to plans by the writer’s elder son. Mikszáth bought the Horpács estate of around 420 holds in 1904; the construction was financed from the honorarium he received for the book Jókai Mór élete és kora (The Life and Times of Jókai Mór). After his death his wife and then his son lived in the building until 1950, when the family was evicted. A memorial room was set up in the building in 1954, and in 1960 the expanded memorial museum opened.
From the 1960s until 1993 the building housed a children’s home. After renovation, the new Mikszáth exhibition opened in 1997; the renewed permanent exhibition “Mesélő Mikszáth” was inaugurated in June 2024. It presents the writer’s childhood, his years in Balassagyarmat and Szeged, his successes in the capital and in literature, his ties to Nógrád, and his work as a journalist and member of the National Assembly. In the furnished living rooms the writer’s everyday objects, manuscripts and the pipe cabinet (pipatórium) can be seen. In front of the manor house stands the full-figure statue of Mikszáth sitting on a bench; in the park is the bust of his wife, Mauks Ilona. The park is a nature conservation area.
