About the museum
The first pieces of Halas lace were presented by Dékáni Árpád at the Christmas exhibition of the Magyar Iparművészeti Társulat (Hungarian Applied Arts Society) in December 1902. Since then the technique has been passed from generation to generation, and Halas lace has become one of Hungary's best-known hungarikums; the living tradition of lace-making was added to the National Register of Hungary's Intangible Cultural Heritage in September 2010.
In the 1930s, during the economic crisis, the Halas lace branch was in danger; the Csipkeház, whose history begins in 1935, was built at that time. Folk artists still work in the Csipkeház today, and the building houses an exhibition of photographs presenting the history of lace and the earlier periods of Halas lace.
As a state gift, Halas lace was presented to many foreign heads of state and monarchs, and in 1996 to Pope II. János Pál. Every year at the beginning of the year the Csipkeház holds an international lace exhibition, where lace from other parts of the world can also be seen.
