About the museum

The institution is one of the oldest provincial museums in the country. It was founded in 1877 from the Tiszafüred Regional Archaeological Society, whose establishment was initiated by the Roman Catholic parish priest Tariczky Endre, while the Reformed teacher Milesz Béla documented the finds collected. The society aimed to excavate antiquities and disseminate archaeological knowledge, and its collecting area extended over the middle Tisza. From 1896 it operated as the Múzeum- és Könyvtáregylet (Museum and Library Society); its collection was housed in rooms on the upper floor of the town hall.

During the World War a considerable part of the collection was lost, and the coin and antiquities collection was almost entirely destroyed. The surviving material was reorganised after the war, and in 1952 the institution moved into the listed classicist mansion built by the Lipcsey family in the first half of the 19th century, when it took the name of Kiss Pál, an honvéd major-general. The mansion is surrounded by a fine park of old trees.

The museum and its branch, the Nyúzó Gáspár Fazekas Tájház (Nyúzó Gáspár Potter's Heritage House), is the only museum institution with an operating licence in the immediate area of Lake Tisza. Its permanent exhibitions guide visitors from Ice Age animal remains, through archaeological finds and the ethnographic material of Tiszafüred's small crafts, to the history of the 18th and 19th centuries. The ethnographic exhibition, opened in 2001, presents the renowned saddle-making, pottery and furniture painting of Füred.
