About the museum

The Kossuth Heritage House is a listed folk residential house built at the end of the 18th century on the western edge of the Hortobágy, along the autumn trade road between Szolnok, Kunhegyes, Madaras and Debrecen. It was once the house of a kunkapitány (Cuman captain). According to local tradition and historical research, Kossuth Lajos stayed here at the end of July 1849, when he was hurrying to a meeting with Görgey Artúr in the Tiszántúl. The Hungarian Holy Crown was also carried along this road, and Bónis Sámuel hid it for one night in Kunmadaras.

In the mid-1980s, the local leadership of the time renovated the building with the aim of housing a collection of the historical and literary memorabilia of the 1848–49 War of Independence. In 1990 the council decided that the Kossuth House would house an institution collecting the ethnographic and literary memorabilia of the War of Independence. The heritage house presents the history of the large village through photographs and objects.
