About the museum

The Kohászati Múzeum (Metallurgy Museum), formerly called Központi Kohászati Múzeum (Central Metallurgy Museum), was founded in 1960 at the Diósgyőr-Vasgyár (Diósgyőr Iron Works). Today it is a branch of the Magyar Műszaki és Közlekedési Múzeum (Hungarian Museum of Science, Technology and Transport), and it operates in Miskolc-Felsőhámor, in the Szinva valley, embraced by the Bükk hills. The museum is housed in the former Kancellária, a baroque listed building.

The permanent exhibition traces the development of Hungarian and world iron metallurgy from antiquity to the end of the 20th century, and follows the history of iron production in Hungary from the 10th century onwards. In four exhibition rooms the four main branches of iron metallurgy are presented in detail – pig-iron and steel production, rolling and forging – while casting, wire production and materials testing are shown more briefly. Working models, scale models, dioramas and original film footage illustrate the processes of each era.

Highlights of the display include the 10th–12th-century bloomery furnaces excavated at Imola and Kőszegfalva, shown in their original context, and a steel chisel made in Diósgyőr that was used in the regulation of the Danube. Nearby, at Újmassa, stand the Fazola furnace and the Massa Museum.
