Massa Múzeum

The museum beside the Fazola furnace in Újmassa presents the history of the Diósgyőr-Hámor ironworks between 1770 and 1870.

Opening hours

About the museum

The Massa Museum was founded in 1963 in Miskolc-Újmassa, next to the Fazola furnace. Today it is a branch of the Magyar Műszaki és Közlekedési Múzeum. The simple stone building stands on the bank of the Garadna stream, and its wall bears a plaque to Fazola Frigyes, who built the furnace.

The permanent exhibition is entitled “A diósgyőr-hámori vasmű története 1770 és 1870 között”. The first room contains a model of the iron-smelting furnace built by Fazola Henrik in Felsőhámor in 1772, together with its furnace profile, beside which are the documents, writings and seals of the Fazola furnace. The further rooms contain cast-iron products, a model and fittings of the forge workshop, and material presenting the history and tools of forging.

Around the museum there are outdoor attractions: the Fazola furnace, which operated until 1871; the reconstructed water-wheel-driven forge with a large hammer, which is set in motion on occasion; and, on the other side of the stream, a technical open-air display of machines used in metallurgy and mining. The complete Hungarian history of iron metallurgy is on show in the Kohászati Múzeum in Felsőhámor.
