About the museum

The museum's predecessor, the Csongrád Vármegyei Történelmi és Régészeti Társulat (Csongrád County Historical and Archaeological Society), was founded on 9 May 1897. The foundations of the collection were laid by the archaeologist Csallány Gábor with Sarmatian, Gepid and Avar grave finds; from 1913 it operated in the neoclassical building in the Széchenyi-liget of Szentes. From 1925 it worked under the name Csongrád Vármegyei Múzeum és Könyvtár (Csongrád County Museum and Library), with a county collecting remit.

In 1949 the museum took the name of Koszta József (1861–1949), a painter from Szentes, who bequeathed his legacy and paintings to the town. The archaeological collection's world-famous piece is the Sickle God (Sarlós Isten) of Szegvár-Tűzkövesi, a Neolithic fired clay idol. The branch institutions of the museum include the Péter Pál Polgárház (Péter Pál Townhouse), the Fridrich Fényírda (Fridrich Photographic Studio) and the Őze Lajos Emlékház (Őze Lajos Memorial House).

Since 2006 the museum has operated in the renovated former county hall on Kossuth tér. It offers permanent and temporary exhibitions and, as a dog-friendly institution, also welcomes visitors arriving with dogs on leads.
