About the museum
The museum operates in the former prison of the Nagykunság, which served its original purpose from 1782 to 1958 and is among the oldest buildings in the town. The Baroque vaulted corridors and the high-ceilinged prison chapel give the exhibitions an unusual space. According to oral tradition, famous outlaws (betyárok) were also imprisoned here; local people still tell the story of Rózsa Sándor’s escape. The museum’s main task is to research and present the old crafts of Kunszentmárton and the Tiszazug, and the justice system, ethnography and history of the Nagykun District. The treasures of the museum’s storeroom are presented in the Látványtár (visual collection).
