About the museum
The Ópusztaszeri Nemzeti Történeti Emlékpark (Ópusztaszer National Historical Memorial Park) opened in 1982, in the area where, according to tradition, the first assembly of the conquering Hungarian chieftains was held, to preserve the memory of the Hungarian Conquest. At the centre of the area stand the Árpád-emlékmű (Árpád Monument) and the Árpád-liget (Árpád Grove), which commemorate the arrival of the Hungarians.
The park’s best-known attraction is the Feszty-körkép (Feszty Panorama), painted by Feszty Árpád between 1892 and 1894 with the collaboration of Mednyánszky László and Vágó Pál. The huge circular painting depicts the entry of the Hungarians of the conquest period, and it can be viewed in the Rotunda building; visits are by fixed time slot.
Since 1978 the outdoor ethnographic collection has been built up in the park; its nineteen groups of buildings and three open-air exhibitions present the peasant architecture and everyday life of the Southern Great Plain. The visitor centre, the Nomád Park (Nomad Park) and the csete-jurták (csete yurts) recall the way of life of the conquest period and nomadic culture. The area also contains several other memorials, a windmill, the ruins of the Szer monastery, a herb house and a number of smaller exhibitions.
The memorial park is run by the ÓNTE Nonprofit Kft.; alongside the historical presentations, visitors can take part in family programmes, games and themed days.
