About the museum
The collections of Csongrád began to take shape in the mid-19th century: valuable finds, objects and books kept in schools and other institutions were moved into the newly opened town museum in October 1956. The ethnographic, local history and archaeological collections each number in the tens of thousands.
In spring 2022, with the support of the National Cultural Fund’s Hungarian Genius Programme, the museum renewed its permanent exhibition, and the exhibition rooms were also technically renovated. The curator of the exhibition “Csongrád, a Fekete vár virága” was the ethnographer Gyöngyössy Orsolya, the museum’s director, and the co-curator was the archaeologist Borsódi Martin, deputy director.
The title of the exhibition refers to the settlement that has risen again and again from its ruins: the “Black Castle” (Fekete vár), which gave the town its name, was built even before the Hungarian Conquest, and the Tatars destroyed it in 1242. The exhibition consists of archaeological, historical and ethnographic units and presents the past of Csongrád from prehistory to 1989.
