About the museum
The Kresz Géza Mentőmúzeum is located in the Mentőpalota on Markó utca, in the heart of Budapest. Within the walls of the palace, built in the 1890s, there operated not only an ambulance station and control centre but also, from the very beginning, a museum presenting the equipment and material records of the rescue service. Dr Kresz Géza founded the museum, the building and the first Hungarian rescue association.
The museum presents its treasures in chronological order and in groups corresponding to their original purposes. Visitors can learn about the history of first aid and rescue in Hungary, from the activities of barber-surgeons in the 18th and 19th centuries, through the establishment of the Budapesti Önkéntes Mentő Egyesület, to the work of municipal rescue associations. They can follow the development of national rescue organisation between the two world wars, and learn about the operation of the Országos Mentőszolgálat (National Ambulance Service), founded in 1948.
Visitors can also glimpse the success story of the rohamkocsi (rapid-response car): the equipment and tools of the first rohamkocsi service can be seen. The collection includes medical and rescue equipment, uniforms and rescue vehicles of various purposes from the 1950s to the present day; the collection is unique in Europe.
