About the museum
The house at Vadász utca 29 in Budapest was built in the 1930s to plans by Kozma Lajos for the construction-materials and glassware business of the Weiss family. The Jewish owners were banned by Hungarian laws from practising their profession. In the emptied building, on 24 July 1944, the Emigration Department of the Swiss Legation’s foreign-interests representation opened, led by the Swiss diplomat Carl Lutz.
After the Arrow Cross takeover, from 15 October 1944 the Üvegház was one of the most important, though fragile, refuges for the persecuted in Budapest. People lived for weeks and months in the corners of the cellars and in the attic, while the leaders prepared emigration lists and protective letters. On 18 January 1945, more than two thousand people were liberated from the building.
On the site of the former garage, the Carl Lutz Alapítvány (Carl Lutz Foundation) opened a memorial room in 2005. The memorial room collects, organises and publishes the history of the Üvegház and the Swiss rescue operation, as well as the list of those who found shelter in the building. It is maintained from donations.
