About the museum
The Országgyűlési Múzeum (Parliamentary Museum) is a national specialist museum founded by law; it collects, preserves and presents the material and documentary relics of the development of Hungarian parliamentarism. Its predecessor was abolished in 1949; the present museum opened to the public on 6 March 2015.
The museum is located in the underground Visitor Centre created during the reconstruction of Kossuth tér. The tour of the Országház ends at the museum. The permanent exhibition presents the history of Hungarian legislation and of the national assemblies; a separate unit deals with the architecture of the Országház, the stone collection, and the memorial site of the 1956 shooting on Kossuth tér with the exhibition attached to it.
The highlights of the exhibition include the former red star of the dome, one of the copper knight statues (rézvitéz), a 1:100 scale model of the building and a presentation of the mechanism of the centrally controlled clocks. The museum is also building a digital archive from the material and photographic documentation of Hungarian parliamentarism as a research resource.
