About the museum

The Magyar Ortodox Egyházi Múzeum (Hungarian Orthodox Church Museum) opened in Miskolc in December 1986, through the cooperation of the Magyar Orthodox Adminisztratúra (Hungarian Orthodox Administration) and the Herman Ottó Múzeum, after nearly a decade of preparation. The museum presents the liturgical art and cultural heritage of the Hungarian parishes of Greek foundation that belong to the Moscow Patriarchate.

The exhibition is housed in the late Baroque building of the once famous Greek school of Miskolc, which opened in 1805 and was built at his own expense by the merchant Janovics Ferenc. In the corridor are displayed the church and school-history documents of the Macedo-Vlachs who settled here in the 17th and 18th centuries; the other three rooms hold treasures of Orthodox church art.

The first room is a reconstruction of a chapel, with copper-engraved consecration icons and antimensia. The middle room shows woven and embroidered liturgical textiles, as well as Balkan, Venetian and Hungarian goldsmith work, including the chalice, altar cross and bishop's candlestick made in Moschopolis in 1721. The third room contains Russian and Serbian icons, further goldsmith masterpieces and miniature boxwood crosses.
