About the museum

In Bükkábrány, about 25 kilometres from Miskolc, part of a 7-million-year-old swamp cypress forest was discovered in the summer of 2007 in the open-cast lignite mine. The seventeen tree trunks found about 65 metres deep were preserved cut off from oxygen and light, so their structure has hardly changed compared with living trees. During the rescue, which lasted almost three months, four fossil trunks weighing 2.5–4.5 tonnes each were transported to the Herman Ottó Múzeum, where their conservation began immediately.

The significance of the find encouraged the construction of a new exhibition venue. The two-storey building of almost 900 m², partly sunk into the ground, opened in November 2013 with two permanent natural science exhibitions. The Őserdei ösvényeken (On Primeval Forest Trails) presents the life and geological development of the Miocene epoch with many interactive elements; in a separate room are the finds of the Rudabánya fossil site, including the remains of Rudapithecus hungaricus, important for the story of human evolution. The Kárpátok ásványai (Minerals of the Carpathians) presents the mineral world of the mountain range through about a thousand specimens.

Since 2019 the permanent exhibition Dinók földjén – MezoZOOikum (In the Land of the Dinosaurs – MezoZOOikum) has also been on show in the former conference and projection room. This bilingual, interactive and child-friendly exhibition presents the life of the Mesozoic in thirteen thematic units, organised around the story of an imagined time-travelling expedition. The opening of the building also made it possible to re-establish the natural science collection that had been closed decades earlier, under the name Pannon-tenger (Pannonian Sea) Földtörténeti és Természetrajzi Tár.
