Színháztörténeti és Színészmúzeum

The Actors’ Museum of Miskolc, in the Thália House, presents the history of the city’s theatre and the memories of its artists.

Opening hoursAdmission HUF 1,800

About the museum

The idea for the Miskolc Actors’ Museum came from the actor Gyarmathy Ferenc, who had been collecting memorabilia connected with the Miskolc theatre since the 1980s. The museum opened on 22 October 1996 on Déryné utca, on the plot where Hungary’s first Hungarian-language stone theatre stood from 1823 to 1843. The renovation of the building and the creation of the exhibition were carried out with support from the Council of Europe.

The museum is today a member institution of the Herman Ottó Múzeum in Miskolc, and its official name is Thália-ház. The permanent exhibition “Ez víg város, itt jó lesz nekünk…” (This Is a Merry Town, It Will Be Good for Us Here…) presents the history of theatre in Miskolc from its beginnings to the present. The first wing recalls the early 19th-century beginnings, and the rooms on the upper floor show the operation of the second stone theatre, which was opened in 1857.

In the large hall, documents, photographs, posters, set designs and personal objects are displayed in an imitated stage setting. Special memorials are dedicated, among others, to the meeting of Ruttkai Éva and Latinovits Zoltán in Miskolc, the Latabár dynasty, the legacy of Dajka Margit and the artists loyal to Miskolc. For the youngest visitors there is a children’s corner with puppets, costumes, colouring and jigsaw puzzles.
