Magyar Vasúttörténeti Park

An open-air railway experience park on the site of the former northern engine shed, with more than a hundred railway vehicles and interactive programmes you can try out.

About the museum

The foundation stone of the Magyar Vasúttörténeti Park (Hungarian Railway History Park) was laid on 22 November 1999, with the support of the Ministry of Transport and Water Management, MÁV Rt. and MÁV Nosztalgia Kft. The project was completed in just under eight months, and on 14 July 2000 the park opened its gates as Europe’s first interactive railway park.

Visitors can explore the collection on the site of the former traction depot of the northern engine shed on Tatai út, covering around 70,000 m². In the 34-stall circular engine shed built in 1911, nostalgia locomotives are based, including the country’s oldest working steam locomotive, from 1870, and the Árpád motor train. In the Orient-csarnok (Orient Hall), particularly significant passenger coaches are on display, such as the Első Erdélyi Vasúti kocsi (First Transylvanian Railway carriage) built in 1868 and the teak dining car.

The collection presents more than a hundred railway vehicle curiosities, including rail cars, trolleys, steam cranes and snowplough, from the steam locomotives of 1870 to high-performance electric locomotives. Most of the vehicles are still operational. Visitors can board a locomotive, ride a hajtány (hand-operated trolley), use the turntable, and travel on the garden railway behind small locomotives.
