About the museum
The museum opened on 10 January 1960 in Rákospalota, and today operates in Pestújhely, on Pestújhelyi út. The institution collects and preserves the memories of the residents of Rákospalota, Pestújhely and Újpalota: objects, documents, photographs and works of fine art.
The largest group of the collection consists of ethnographic objects, including folk costumes, furniture, ceramics, as well as peasant work tools, hand tools, ploughs, harrows and machines. The Madarász bequest is of national significance: from a gift of the painter Madarász Adeline came 22 paintings by Madarász Viktor and 31 oil and watercolour paintings by the artist herself, along with drawings, family photographs, furniture and everyday objects, some of which can be seen in the display storeroom.
The permanent exhibition, rich in interactive elements, focuses mainly on the events of the 19th and 20th centuries and the characteristic features of Rákospalota and Pestújhely. The exhibition “A Palota földjén” (On the Land of Palota) presents the local history curiosities of Rákospalota, while “Széchenyitelep – Pestújhely Aranykönyve” (Széchenyitelep – The Golden Book of Pestújhely) presents the history of Pestújhely from its founding to 1950. Temporary exhibitions are held at both external and internal venues.
