About the museum

The Civitas Fortissima Múzeum was founded in January 2011 by Matúz Gábor, born in Balassagyarmat, through civic cooperation and without state support. The first exhibition opened in the building of the Madách Filmszínház (Madách Cinema), and presented the fateful period of January 1919, when the town’s residents and soldiers from the surrounding area pushed back the occupying Czechoslovak troops. Following this event, Balassagyarmat received the name “legbátrabb város” (the “most courageous town”).

The growing collection outgrew its original location, so in 2015 it moved to the former Huszár Villa at the corner of Ady Endre út and Széchenyi utca. The building bears the name of Baráti Huszár Aladár, who was the town’s commander during the Czech expulsion. The exhibition evokes the events and the period through books, documents, soldiers’ uniforms and films.
