About the museum
The founder of the museum was the historian Nagy Iván; collecting began in 1891 with the aim of gathering everything of historical, archaeological, natural or ethnographic significance relating to Nógrád County. Today the Palóc Múzeum operates as a member institution of the Hungarian National Museum and keeps ethnographic, literary, historical, photographic and archive collections in its building beside the Palóc grove.
Among the permanent exhibitions, “From the Cradle to the Grave” presents village life in Nógrád from the last third of the 19th century, with the customs of birth, marriage and death, folk belief and folk art. “The Library of a Learned Country Gentleman” recalls the library of the museum’s founder Nagy Iván and the events of Hungarian history with links to Nógrád. Behind the museum stand the Palóc House and its farm buildings: a three-section dwelling moved from the village of Karancskeszi in 1932, together with a stable, barn, oil press, chapel and roadside crucifix, forming the country’s first open-air collection. The museum also includes the Madách Memorial Room in the former county hall building.
