Budenz-ház

About the museum

In the building, which had previously served as a residence, a permanent exhibition from the legacy of the art historian Ybl Ervin opened in 1969. The legacy consists partly of 18th- and 19th-century furniture, family portraits and decorative objects of the Ybl family, and partly of Ybl Ervin’s private collection of fine and applied art.

The works of fine art include paintings and graphic works by Aba-Novák Vilmos, Bernáth Aurél, Csók István, Ferenczy Noémi, Rudnay Gyula, Szőnyi István and Vaszary János; among the creators of the sculptures and medals are Beck Ö. Fülöp, Borsos Miklós, Fémes Beck Vilmos, Ferenczy Béni, Medgyessy Ferenc, Pátzay Pál and Vedres Márk.

The building is named after Budenz József, the German-born Finno-Ugric scholar and founder of Hungarian comparative linguistics, who lived here between 1858 and 1860. The house received its characteristic Copf-style façade in 1781; this date can still be seen on the keystone of the gateway. Its foundations are medieval, as proved by a 13th-century well uncovered during restoration work.
