Új Magyar Képtár

The permanent contemporary art exhibition of Székesfehérvár on Hungarian art after 1945, housed in a stone house with medieval walls.

Opening hoursAdmission HUF 1,000 Café

About the museum

The imposing stone house, of 13th-century origin, with medieval walls and an enclosed balcony, took its L-shaped form in the 15th and 16th centuries. After the liberation from the Ottomans it was first owned by Prince Eszterházy Pál; in 1712 it was bought by Meszlényi János, the alispán (deputy county administrator). Later it passed into the hands of the Catholic Church; at that time a Romantic-style oratory was built in the courtyard to the plans of Schmied Károly, and at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries the Székesfehérvári Királyi Törvényszék (Royal Court of Székesfehérvár) operated in it.

The fine art collection of the Szent István Király Múzeum is among the most important collections in the country. Its character was shaped in the early 1960s by a decades-long exhibition programme that began with the Csontváry exhibition and made the museum known nationwide. A large part of the works in the collection were created between 1945 and the present day.

The permanent exhibition Új Magyar Képtár (New Hungarian Gallery) offers a selection from this: its seven rooms and corridors present, in chronological order, the most important trends and artists of the post-war period that were considered progressive. The Museum Café also operates in the building complex; it hosts literary evenings, concerts and exhibitions of young artists.
