About the museum
The predecessor of today’s Szent István Király Múzeum, the Történelmi és Régészeti Egylet (Historical and Archaeological Society), founded on 24 October 1873, set itself the goal of popularising history and archaeology. Objects of ethnographic character entered the collection from the early years on; the exhibition opened in May 1880 also presented guild memorabilia of the town.
The next great era in the development of the collection was marked by the work of museum director Marosi Arnold (1910–1939). During his directorship the archaeological material grew most, but the ethnographic collection also expanded considerably. In the 1910s objects connected with the guilds and trade associations of Székesfehérvár came into the museum; this is the oldest and historically most important core of the collection. In 1913 the documents and objects of the pottery guild of Csákvár also came to the museum.
The most valuable part of the guild material can be seen in the permanent exhibition “Tárgyalkotó hagyomány – fejezetek Fejér megye néprajzából” (Crafted Tradition: Chapters from the Ethnography of Fejér County). The building on Országzászló tér also houses the museum library, alongside temporary exhibitions.
