About the museum
The memorial site was opened in 1976 as the Történelmi Emlékhely (Historical Memorial Site), after archaeological excavations, on the battlefield of the Battle of Mohács of 29 August 1526. In the battle the Hungarian army clashed with the Ottoman forces of Sultan Szulejmán; in about an hour and a half fourteen thousand soldiers fell, and medieval Hungary lost its king. The mass graves of the battle were uncovered in 1960 thanks to the work of the archaeologist Papp László.
About 1,700 soldiers rest in the park. In the grave garden stand wooden sculptures of King II. Lajos, Sultan Szulejmán, Tomori Pál, Kanizsai Dorottya and anonymous warriors; the underground level of the reception building houses an exhibition and a digital terrain table presenting the battle. The bronze memorial by Pálskei József consists of elements evoking fourteen thousand bones.
As the 500th anniversary of the battle approaches, the reconstruction and extension of the memorial site began on 1 October 2025; the facility remains closed during the works.
