About the museum
The mills of the Csele stream valley are first mentioned in written sources in 1331. Twenty-four mills once operated on the stream; the Szent Miklós water mill is the only one that has survived, still grinds and can be visited. Its origins go back to the 14th century. The three-storey building is made of stone, fired brick and adobe.
Visitors can get to know the water wheel, the drive mechanism and the stone-pair grinding mechanism on a mill tour of thirty to forty minutes. The mill history exhibition presents the history of grinding from prehistory to the present, with hand mills that can be tried out. It also houses one of the country’s largest collections of flour sacks, with sacks from Swabian, Székely, Upper Hungarian (felvidéki), Subcarpathian (Kárpátalja) and Baranya families, as well as a rare treadle mill driven by human power. By prior arrangement, a papermaking workshop can also be visited, where paper can be made from recycled paper.
