About the museum
At the address of today’s Ethnological Centre, the children’s kindergarten “Dječje zabavište Beli Manastir” operated from 1951 to 1986, and afterwards families lived in the building until its renovation. The idea of founding the centre arose in 2009, when the Udruga Hrvatska žena (Croatian Women’s Association) found itself without a place to exhibit its many exhibits. In cooperation with the Town of Beli Manastir, the Udruženje obrtnika Baranje (Baranja Craftsmen’s Association) and the Centar za kulturu (Centre for Culture), the project “Kuća baranjske baštine” (House of Baranja Heritage) was designed.
The project was financed with non-repayable funds from the Operational Programme “Regional Competitiveness”, with the Town of Beli Manastir as the holder and the Tourist Board of Baranja as partner. It was carried out from October 2014 to 31 May 2016, when the centre was solemnly opened. The building was renovated and extended, and on the same plot an outdoor pavilion with a green roof and a stage for 120 people was laid out, intended for presentations of traditional customs.
The aim of the centre is to present all the ethnic groups that historically settled in Baranja and to preserve their customs and traditions from oblivion. Exhibitions, workshops and educational programmes are held in the centre.
