About the museum

The Kanizsai Dorottya Múzeum was founded in Mohács in 1923. Today it operates at Kisfaludy utca 9, in the oldest-settled part of the town near the Danube. The permanent exhibition was renewed in 2023 with the support of the Magyar Géniusz Programme of the National Cultural Fund.

The exhibition “Népek találkozása a mohácsi Dunánál” (Meeting of Peoples on the Danube at Mohács) consists of four thematic units: it presents the history of Mohács and its religious and ethnic traditions; the material culture and folklore of the Croatian, Serbian and Slovene communities in Hungary; the Busójárás carnival custom, which connects the two parts; and how the local community has remembered the Battle of Mohács of 1526.

Among the objects on display are a portrait of the young Louis II (a work by István Dorffmeister), Ottoman utensils, weapons, mail shirts, folk costumes, textiles, masterpieces of pottery, guild memorabilia, tools of river life on the Danube, a late 19th-century Bosnian-Croatian room from the Pécs area, musical instruments, wedding flags and master-of-ceremonies towels (vőfélykendő). The collection holds more than twenty thousand objects and documents, twenty-three thousand photographs and archival audio material.
