About the museum
The memorial house is a three-room, reed-roofed village house of the Upper Tisza region, typical of poor peasant architecture. The building was designated as the birthplace in 1952, on the tenth anniversary of Móricz Zsigmond’s death, and is protected as a folk monument.
The first exhibition opened in 1966, and the second, renovated one in 1979, which linked the peasant interior with a literary-historical exhibition. In 1997, after renovation, the literary-historical material of the smaller room was replaced by a furnished period interior.
The furnishings partly consist of furniture belonging to the writer’s relatives, but the house also preserves original Móricz objects, such as the cradle and the hat. In the courtyard stands the bronze statue by Varga Imre, unveiled in 1979.
