About the museum
The Túristvándi water mill is a late-18th-century mill in a protected listed-monument setting on the bank of the River Túr. It has three undershot structures driven by water-paddle wheels 6.2 metres in diameter; the western side is built into the bank, and the rest stands on piles. In its size and construction the structure is unique in Europe.
Until 1904 two millstones were used there to make peasant flour, and one stone for grinding; later a roller mill was installed, and a dynamo was fitted to light the mill and the miller’s house. After the Second World War the mill suffered serious damage; it was restored to working condition in 1963 and 1977, and its roof shingling was restored to the pre-1890 pattern.
The mill’s structure is still suitable for grinding. An exhibition in the building presents the history and operation of the water mill.
